It was decentralized but difficult to capture user data.

It quickly morphed into a more centralized model.

Web2

The Social Web

The web becomes dynamic. Browsers and phones turn into apps and data moves to the cloud.

The result of the Social Web has been a near monopolization of our data and digital spaces. In turn, a handful of companies wield unprecedented power.

In our data plutocracy, we must abide by the rules of the data owners. And many of us get locked out. For example, over one billion people remain underbanked.

In 2009, This became a reality.

Bitcoin combined 40 years of research and development to create a peer-to-peer electronic payment solution.

Vitalik Buterin extended the principles of the Bitcoin blockchain and made them general purpose with a programmable virtual machine.

Web3 is a group of technologies that leverages the core building block of blockchain and smart contracts. It upends the power structure of web2 by returning to the open standards and protocols from Web1 and by giving revenue back to creators and users.
